The birds and the bees
It’s important that we look after those regular visitors to our gardens. Here are a few tips to keep our feathered and fuzzy friends happy;
- Birdbaths – While Scotland isn’t quite the Sahara, water will evaporate quickly so keep your birdbath topped up to provide a place to drink, wash and cool down.
- Feed the birds – Birds will generally be bug hunting at this time of year to feed their babies but make sure you continue to fill bird tables and feeders to give them a helping hand.
- Be careful when trimming hedges as birds can be nesting inside
- Although it goes against what we normally recommend – allowing a few weeds to grow in your grass will help wildlife. It can provide a habitat for insects which in turn will support the growth of birds. So you’re helping contribute to the circle of life!
- Nigella seeds – sowing these seeds will give you unusual looking flowers that will also provide pollen for bees and butterflies.
