Sowing crops in August
On the vegetable patch, sowing and planting out now will keep your cropping season going, providing you with short-term harvests of salad leaves and other quick-growing crops such as radishes. Crops will cover ground, preventing weds germinating.
Our crops of choice would be;
Radish – who 1 cm deep in rows 30cm apart
Phacelia – this will flower in as little as 6 weeks and the bees love it. Sprinkle seeds across the whole bed area to create a gorgeous display
Beetroot – Sow your seeds throughout the whole of the usual growing period. Sowing your beetroot seeds in groups two weeks apart will give you a regular supply when it comes to harvesting later on.
Micro-greens – Ensure a constant supply of micro-greens by sowing successionally every week, so that new leaves should be ready to harvest just as the last batch is ending. Most are ready to pick just a few days after germinating.
Remember you can grow herbs just now too. Try;
- Rosemary
- Marjoram
- Fennel
- Sage
- Chives
