Karsten is part of The Plant Market team. He’s a big supporter of a sustainable approach to gardening. Read on to find out more.

What attracted you to a career in horticulture?
Since my original profession was in a completely different area (finances, insurances and insurance law) I took the chance whilst living in Sweden for a couple of years, being able to turn my hobby into my daily working life. In Sweden, I’d been working for the local town council, doing pretty much everything from working in the plant nursery to planting and maintenance within the communal greenspaces.
What is your ideal garden?
My garden is my ideal garden. A mix of different plants to keep up the biodiversity, which was very low as we moved house in 2019 (lawn, hawthorne and forsyth).
Slowly but surely, our garden is transforming into a place where we spend most of our time at home on a sunny day.
What do you plant in your outdoor space?
Most plants I do love but in general plants with not that much need of permanent maintenance. Last year I did two green roof projects with alpine plants on a shed and a sauna roof in our garden. I’m so pleased with how it turned out.
What’s the one thing we should all be doing to be more sustainable in our gardens/outdoor spaces?
Not creating a “green space” by turfing it, there’s so much more you can do to attract wildlife and create interest in your outdoor space.
