What to sow now – October
October might feel like a quieter month in the garden, but there are still plenty of things you can sow and grow.
Microgreens – Perfect for growing indoors on a sunny windowsill. Try radish, pea shoots, rocket or mustard for a quick crop of fresh, nutritious greens to keep your immune system boosted through winter.
Green manures – If you have empty areas of soil, sowing a green manure can help protect and improve the soil over winter. They can help prevent erosion, suppress weeds and add organic matter when incorporated into the soil.
Sweet peas – Plant now and enjoy later! Sow them indoors in pots or root trainers and keep them somewhere cool and light. They’ll develop strong roots over winter, giving you a head start on beautiful blooms next summer.
Top tip – You don’t need lots of space, just make the most of what you have, whether that’s a windowsill, greenhouse, raised bed or spare patch of soil.
